knee cap size guide

Using a soft measuring tape while standing in a straight position, measure around the largest area of your thigh, about 4 inches above your knee cap. Note this measurement, and measure around the largest area of your calf, also about 4 inches below the knee cap. Be sure to take your measurements in centimeters. Most Indian brands include their size charts in centimeters instead of inches. AGEasy would be no exception.

When measuring, take your knee measurement in the evening. This is better than morning measurements as knees deviate due to the standing and walking, while morning measurements may result in a size that is too loose in the evening. Avoid measuring the uninjured knee if you are in recovery from surgery or injury. Swelling from injuries and arthritis tends to deviate measurements by a couple of millimeters. This difference can determine whether the knee cap will remain in place or slide down.

Go for the lower range if your measurements fall into different size categories. Knee caps that are a little loose can be adjusted with hinged design straps and will still provide sufficient support. In contrast, knee caps that are too tight will hinder circulation and cause skin irritation during movement.

Understanding a Knee Cap Size Chart

Most knee cap size charts include a centimetre range for small, medium, large, extra large and sometimes double extra large. For example, AGEasy's Comfort Ease Knee Cap and its Comfort Knee Cap with Hinged Side Support use 35 to 42 cm for small (S), 42 to 48 cm for medium (M), 48 to 56 cm for large (L), and double extra large (XXL) is classified as 64 to 72 cm. These ranges use the measurement of your upper and lower kneecap circumference and not your clothing size or shoe size.

When looking at the chart, consider your own measurements and not what you remember buying last. Body shape changes can occur with age, weight loss and gain, or muscle loss, and someone who wore medium 2 years ago might find themselves needing large now. Different manufacturers adjust their charts based on production batches too, so a large from one brand can be completely different from a large in another.

If you find yourself sitting exactly between two sizes on the chart, consider how you intend to use the knee cap. For everyday use underneath loose clothes, a bigger size is likely to be more comfortable. For sport, physical activity, or if you need to provide firm support to a joint after an injury, then a snugger fit within the recommended range will be better, and improve stability.

Mistakes People Make When Purchasing Knee Caps

  1. The first mistake is buying solely based on clothing size. This is not how sizing works in this case. While clothing sizing is based on general body proportions, knee caps must fit a specific circumference around the knee.
  2. The second mistake is thinking tighter equals more support. A knee cap that squeezes skin will actually risk blood circulation and can even cause numbness, not to mention the unpleasant appearance of red circle marks after an hour of use. The right support should come from even and consistent compression, not targeted pressure.
  3. The third mistake is thinking about support in the wrong way. For example, someone with mild, everyday knee stiffness would benefit from a lightweight, stretchable knee cap like the AGEasy Comfort Ease Knee Cap, which is designed to be used daily and provides gentle compression. In contrast, a person recovering from a ligament injury, meniscus tear, or someone living with osteoarthritis is likely to need a hinged design, for instance, the AGEasy Comfort Knee Cap with Hinged Side Support, which provides additional lateral stability via rigid hinges and adjustable straps. On the other hand, someone requiring a post-injury rehab knee brace with high activity level is likely to need firm support and may do better with a design like the AGEasy Hinged Max Comfort Knee Cap, which provides sufficient cushioning alongside strong lateral support for extended wear.
  4. The fourth mistake is overlooking the possibility of swelling or reduction of muscle mass over time. Older adults, and those suffering from arthritis in particular, tend to lose muscle mass around the thighs and calves. A knee cap purchased 2 years ago may now be too loose, causing it to slip and slide while walking. To ensure the best fit, it is important to take your measurements every year or each time your weight changes significantly.

Choosing the Right Fit for Your Needs

After you obtain your measurements and comprehend the measurements on the knee cap size chart, you can then select the fit that best serves its purpose.

  1. If you require light daily support while walking or standing, opt for a knee cap that has a stretchy and breathable fabric that is inconspicuous under clothes.
  2. If you are recovering from a surgical procedure or an injury, a knee cap with lateral hinges and adjustable straps is ideal, as you can adjust the amount of compression as swelling decreases during recovery.
  3. If you will be using the knee cap for exercise or strenuous labor, select one that has an inner lining made of grip material, as this will prevent the knee cap from rolling down and will keep it in place during activity.

Finally, try on the knee cap and walk in it for a few minutes to assess the fit. If possible, sit, stand, and walk up a few flights of stairs. A knee cap that is well-fitted will move together with your leg joints and not pinch behind your knees nor slide down it.

A medically engineered knee cap can assist in the movement of the daily activities of those with persistent pain, swelling or instability of the knee. However, it doesn't substitute the need for medical attention. In order to understand the reason for the knee pain, and to confirm the kind of support the knee actually requires, consult with your doctor or physiotherapist.
