As you get older, travel becomes more important. Whether it is visiting family, attending medical appointments, going on pilgrimages, or taking a well-earned holiday, affordable and comfortable travel can make a real difference to an older adult's quality of life.
In the last few years, travel benefits have changed frequently. Some benefits have been phased out or reduced. Other benefits still exist and are offered by separate airlines, state transport corporations rather than a single, widespread travel benefits program. As a result, seniors don't take advantage of benefits they are entitled to, or are surprised when they go to enjoy benefits that no longer exist.
You need to know how to take advantage of benefits, which documents to carry, who qualifies, and how they are different for trains, flights, and state transport buses. Knowing about travel benefits and recently issued policies can help avoid frustration and extra expense at check-in counters. Your parents deserve to take advantage of the benefits they are entitled to.
Railways: Indian Railways Suspended the Age-Based Fare Concession in March 2020
Amongst its cost-cutting measures for the ongoing pandemic, Indian Railways suspended the age-based fare concession on 20 March 2020. Men aged 60 and above and women aged 58 and above, respectively, had received concessions of 40% and 50% on base fares. Even with frequent questions about the concession in Parliament in the years that followed and talks with the Ministry of Finance prior to the annual Budget, this suspension has remained in force even as of 2026.
Consider any news article or social media message touting the concession as reinstated as a proposal. Do not consider it a rule. Confirm the status on the official IRCTC website.
Other Facilities Extended by Indian Railways
While the concessions on fares have been withdrawn, the comfort provisions remain.
Booked lower berth facility. Men aged 60 and above and women aged 45 and above travelling alone or in a pair are eligible for reserved lower berths in Sleeper, 3AC and 2AC classes. While booking, opt for the senior citizen quota or the lower berth quota, whichever is applicable.
Lower berth preference in automatic allotment. If lower berths remain vacant when reservation charts are prepared, eligible senior passengers may be moved from upper berths to available lower berths by the system itself.
Wheelchair assistance and battery operated carts. Major stations provide wheelchairs and porter assistance. Request the station manager or the Rail Madad helpline 139 with enough time in advance.
Divyangjan concessions. Passengers with a disability certificate will continue to receive concessions in specified classes. Age is not a factor here, so a senior with a disability certificate qualifies where a senior without one does not.
For every journey, passengers should carry an original photo ID with a date of birth. Aadhaar, PAN, passport, or voter ID are some of the documents accepted. Ticket examiners verify the age to determine the berth allotment.
A foldable walking stick can fit in a berth side pocket and is useful on moving corridors and ramps on the train. A walking stick with integrated seating is helpful to wait on long, crowded train station platforms.
Air Travel: Airline-Specific Discounts, Not a Government Initiative
There is no central government order that mandates airlines to offer a senior citizen fare discount. Each airline has its own policy which may change with no prior notice. Also, such discounts, if offered, are applicable only on the base fare.
There are three important rules to keep in mind regarding senior fare discounts.
- Book directly on the airline. Senior fares are added on the airline website and/or through the app under a separate fare category. Most third party websites do not offer them.
- Confirm age cutoff. Most travel providers set their age limits at 60 or older on travel date not booking date.
- Check posted fares after tax. Unadjusted fares have been known to save money on tickets, even with adjusted fares.
Pack photo ID with date of birth. Airport staff validate ticket purchases, so a ticketing name and ID name mismatch results in a denied purchase or access to the boarding area.
Airport Assistance Is a Right, Not a Favour
Through the DGCA Civil Aviation Regulations, Indian airlines are obligated to provide passenger assistance for reduced mobility, including wheelchair services, throughout the terminal and during boarding and deplaning. Services are coded using standard symbols. WCHR is for passengers who can walk short distances and are assisted over the span of the terminal. WCHS is for passengers who are unable to climb stairs. WCHC is for passengers who require assistance to and from the seat.
Make the request for assistance via your airline app or customer service at least 48 hours prior to the flight. Requests before check-in will be accommodated as staffing permits but during peak hours this cannot be guaranteed.
Senior Citizens and the Impact of Cabin Pressure on Lung Health
Older adults and people with asthma or other chronic conditions may be more affected by changes in cabin pressure during flights. An easy-to-carry fingertip pulse oximeter (weighing less than 50 grams) helps families check patient oxygen saturation levels during a layover. Speak with your family physician before you travel on a long haul flight especially after a stroke, cardiac event, or surgery.
State Bus Services: The Greatest, Yet Most Unreliable
State road transport corporations provide the maximum senior citizen benefits in India and the rules vary from state to state.
Some states have free travel schemes. The Telangana "Mahalakshmi" scheme provides free bus travel to ladies in government run buses. The Uttar Pradesh Government has sanctioned funds for free travel for ladies aged 60 and above on UPSRTC buses.
Others provide percentage discounts. Haryana Roadways provides a 50% fare discount to women aged 60 and above and men aged 65 and above. The concession also applies to interstate routes. Karnataka's KSRTC has provided a 25% discount for senior citizens.
The age limit, gender restrictions, types of routes covered vary everywhere. A discount for a regular bus may not be applicable on a Volvo or sleeper bus. Check the official website of the transport corporation in your state before you travel and again when crossing a state border.
Documents to Bring
Photocopy your photo ID with birth date, pack a set of photocopies, the state issued senior citizen card if you have one, your disability certificate (if applicable), and a one page medical summary listing your conditions, medications, allergies, and an emergency contact.
Make sure you have a packed list of medications that you check against what you have actually packed. Keep medicines in your carry-on baggage; they should never be packed in checked baggage.
Verify Before You Pay
Changes in budgets, state elections, and the airline fare cycle mean concessions change. The information above is accurate for 2026 only and is subject to revision. Please verify on official sources: IRCTC and Indian Railways for trains, the airline website for flights, and the state transport corporation website for buses.
This article covers travel policy and general wellbeing, but is not meant to replace medical advice. Long distance trips or travel to high altitude locations should be discussed with your parent's doctor prior to the travel. Pre-existing conditions or recent surgery may require extra recovery time. Relax and recover during this time to avoid making it longer than it should be.
