FAQs

Nebulisers transform liquids in aerosols through inhalation. Nebuliser does not require pressing and simultaneous inhalation, like the inhalers; instead, it requires a natural breathing process that makes nebuliser suitable for young children or seniors. Medication is placed into the container (medication chamber); then nebuliser aerosolizes it making particles tiny and capable of getting inside your lungs.
There are many applications of nebulisers. Nebuliser is applied in the treatment of respiratory diseases with medications such as bronchodilators (salbutamol, ipratropium), which relieve airways constriction; corticosteroids (budesonide, fluticasone) relieving inflammation in airways; saline (salt water) solution in case of mucosal congestion in airways helping with its easier expulsion; antibiotics/antifungal drugs in case of specific respiratory tract infections. Your doctor may advise the use of a nebuliser either because an inhaler does not provide sufficient relief or in case of exacerbation of the disease, or if it is hard for you to use an inhaler. For home usage, nebulisers are used to maintain patients with COPD or asthma daily and deal with acute exacerbations because of respiratory illnesses.
The answer on how often you need to use the nebuliser depends on what illness you suffer from, what medication you use and your doctor's recommendations. As a rule, in case you need daily nebulisation, one performs 1-3 nebulisation sessions per day, each lasting from 10 to 15 minutes. During exacerbations, the amount of the sessions will increase upon your doctor's recommendations. Excessive nebulisation is not desirable since side effects exist for some medications, particularly, for bronchodilators whose excessive usage can affect the cardiovascular system.
Not necessarily, depending on what causes the cough. If your cough has been caused by airways' constriction (asthma or COPD), or because of mucus presence in lower airways, then a nebuliser treatment will be beneficial. However, if the reason behind your coughing is an upper respiratory tract infection, postnasal drip, and throat irritation, then the use of the nebuliser will not help and, probably, even hurt since it will not allow the infection to get out of your airways. Consider trying steaming instead.
Generally, yes, if you use it in accordance with the recommendations of your doctor in conjunction with appropriate medications. Nebulisation is just the method of inhaling your medications; thus, the safety largely depends on the substance you are inhaling. You need to remember that it is extremely important to ensure proper nebulizer's hygiene because the contamination can introduce pathogens into your airways. After each session, the medication chamber, mask, and tubes need to be washed and dried; also, the device itself needs to be sanitized in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Some nebulizers use meshes, which also need to be cleaned to function properly.
Steamer produces vapour that moisturises your upper airways. This process does not include delivering any medications; only humidifying the air within your nasal passages and throat. Thus, steamers are useless in cases of any respiratory diseases since they do not treat them; they also cannot help with asthma and other lung diseases. Nebuliser aerosolizes the medications and delivers them directly into the deeper part of your airways (bronchi and alveoli).
